When I asked Gordon about this a few years ago, he recommended leaving it at the 45-degree "half way" point, to reduce compression of the o-rings and allow for drying of the internal areas.
Also, he recommended dis-assembling and lubricating the o-rings when it starts to become difficult to go fully open or fully closed. I find that I end up doing this 2 to 3 times a year.
