| Re: Shipping Crates/Cases Data Point: Just shipped a Mark-15 by FEDEX without even a "Fragile" sticker on it from New Jersey to California, in one of the fish-totes with snap-on lid that I suggest, and it arrived (naturally) in perfect shape. The totes weigh under 5 pounds with lid, and cost less than $25.00. I tie-wrapped the thing thru the handle-hole (tie-wraps the lid on) and ran a cheap ratchet-strap thru the handles and around the bottom just to make sure. Braces and Belt for a $15K piece of equipment.
Seems that compared to the UK or Pelican boxes, that this is a few $ saved, and (far more significantly) about 25 pounds of extra gear available on an airline trip. Plus the totes are wonderful for washing gear and for leak-testing rigs. Fill 'em up with a garden hose. When I travel I take two, one for the rig, and one for everything else, clothes included. Add a pair of thin duffle bags for 'onsite' dive gear and clothes and you're in business.
The UK cases are great if you really want to protect stuff. It just seems that they are too heavy for the airlines, and too bulky for the dive boat. Mine live in my garage... collecting dust. On the other hand I not only suggest but also provide loaner fish totes aboard the boat for divers to use to keep their gear organized. Most everyone who uses one for a day buys it and takes it home, and when they return they want to buy 6 more. They are that good.
