| Re: The big step I too was at the point of going technical with my diving. I told my prospective instructor that my goal was to eventually dive technical with a Rebreather. He told me that I could skip the OC technical training and go directly to Rebreather training.
I was already certified with the Dolphin Semi-Closed unit. This made the decision pretty easy for me. If you will ever use trimix, the savings on the cost of gas is incredibal.
Once trained and familiar with your Rebreather, the complications are very minimal (10 min to set it up and be ready to dive). I have sold my OC gear and will not dive without my RB anymore.
Sometimes I am stuck to an OC dive schedule when on the boat with OC divers, but sometimes I am not.
It is definitely more of an investment right of the bat, just the purchase of a unit hurts the wallet and it is a little bit more costly to use per dive.
You will have to decide if a Rebreather is justifyable for the kind of diving that you plan to do. If you photograph - it is awesome!
