Refer to Stephanes post and take a good gander at the top left assembly in the pic he posted. That is pretty much your VR3 Fischer receptacle. The O-ring (Item 4) is indeed recessed and probably 1/3 or less will be visible proud of the inner surface of the receptacle and quite a way down towards the bottom. You may need an eye-glass and a small light to see it clearly.
