Your mentioning of an unusual charging circuitry is interesting. Can you elaborate on this?
It is pretty straight forward, but the charging voltage is non-standard (3.6V target voltage), so none of the Li-ion charging chips work for it.

It takes the microcontroller to charge the battery. Plugging in USB power powers the micro and also provides the battery power. ARM 7 micros are very cheap, fortunately.
