This was first done on the CIS's to allow the diver to verify the sensor dynamics. It's a good thing to be able to do. I did the one that the article was written about at the request of Chris Gregory for his Inspiration during a period in which Inspiration divers were dropping like flies. The one I did for him worked great, and had only sufficient volume to gently "puff" the sensor. Anyone who was "concerned" about damage to the sensors never saw the system.
This is still a very valid safety tool, and ought to be studied.
