Perhaps you should see it the other way around and say: With a full scrubber I need to go diving a bit more..

You could always make a cylindrical packer, like a thick walled tube. Then when you insert this into the scrubber it leaves a smaller cross sectional area in the center but the same column height. Just fill the center piece with sorb and bobs your aunty.
Just a thought. Don't know if it would actually work. I guess you would have to have some sort of seal around the outside to stop any CO2 laden gasses bypassing the scrubber material. Anyone brave enought to try it?
