I tried to do something like that and the bottom line is I gave up, not worth the headache. You can buy DS-4's 1st stages for $165 and use your old stuff if you like.
But if you are already planning to buy a meg you might as well go with the full package, it is only a couple of hundred dollars over the meg lite version and what you decide you don't want you can keep in your box of spares or sell on the board. Why be cheap with regulators when you are spending major bucks on the breather?

Anyway, my 2 cents, only my opinion so no need to flame. I will be at the JB experience as well if you'd like to talk about options etc...
