It depends on the diving you like. Caves are about twelve hours away. The largest artificial wreck in the world, Oriskany, has been recently sunk nine hours away in Pensacola, FL. The Flower Gardens are just an hour and a half drive to Freeport where you catch a liveaboard (Flower Gardens are 110 miles out in the Gulf). I'd recommend the
M/V Spree. CCRs are permitted but I'm pretty sure not the Dolphin. Please verify with Capt. Frank though. There is also some rig diving but the vis is not glorious unless you do High Island 389A while diving in the Flower Gardens on the M/V Spree. In a month or two there will be a nice, new, large, wreck (Texas Clipper), that will be sunk in Padre Island (nine hours away or something like that). And then there is the diving theme park,
Mammoth Lake, that will be ready soon. It's only an hour and half drive.
Bring your dive gear. :-)
When will you be in Houston our best dive months are September and October.
The 40 mile rigs have 50-60 ft visability down to about 95 ft (bottom is around 110-115 ft) 30 mile rigs have 30-40 ft vis down to about 70 ft
(bottom is 80-100 ft) If the rains will ever stop this will improve and also open up some wrecks. Mammoth Lake will probably open November 1
