Are they compatible with a salt water environment? I can't recall exactly but thought I read something about moisture penetrating the outer layers or neck threads and causing corrosion on the internal flask (if it has an aluminium sphere underneath - I'm guessing here)

Dunno. Dreager would say "No". They are probably fine though, designed for harsh environments, etc. I'd keep them from getting dropped and would "use 'em and see". I know that they have been used before by guys who could not source metal spheres. Might help the ass-down trim of the Mark-15 too, at the expense of needing to add more weight elsewhere to the thing.
