Great question.
Clearly he is not qualified to say whether he is up to making the dive: he doesn't know what it is he doesn't know, because he has neither been taught nor does he have prior experience. If he's not up to making the dive he is likely to kill one or both of you. That's not a calculated risk. I strongly believe that, once fully appraised of the risks, a man has a right to kill himself in any damn fool way he choses to. I just don't think your buddy is in a position to evaluate the risks.

I would be interested to know the legal side of this. If anyone heard him say he lacks the qualifications, and then later there was a serious incident, my guess is you would be fried in court. I'd guess you would lack any of the legal protection you would have if you had formally been his teacher. I'm also intrigued by the legal side of solo trimix diving: would it void the insurance for your dependants?
