I recently had an experience where at the beginning of the dive my breathing felt strange with some added WOB. This unnerved me so I fiddled with hoses and mouthpiece and soon discovered the mouthpiece wasn't fully open. It was a very simple problem to sort but for a short time it was a worry.

Maybe your mouthpiece could have rotated and become partially closed.
