I'm not sure why this should be your responsibility unless you declined insurance coverage (and its expense.)

If the shipper decided on the shipment method (and insurance coverage) then IMHO it is on him. If you decided on it, then it is on you.

When I sell something this is how I handle it; if I am instructed how to ship, then the responsibility is on the buyer; if I choose, the responsibility is on me.

At least that's how I see it.

BTW from long experience, if there IS a claim on insurance the shipper gets the money (and gets the fun of the fight with the shipping company), not you - which further buttresses my point.
